  1. I wish i can understand why "Johnathan is overly confident about the war".I f that were me I would stay home in the warmth and protection of my parents.Unless he wants to live up to any expectations but George Washington went to the army when he was 16 and Johnathan is only 13 he can wait but that's only my opinion.

  2. I find it intresting that "johnathan is so eager to become a soldier and fight".If i were him i would be terrifyed because i definetly don't want to die or get hurt. Is Johnathans real reason to go to war is to wear the uniforms and have a gun? If thats the case i think hes really dumb, he should think the whole thing through. Plus he is a child, only 13 years old, I think he's really young, also will he go to school and get treated like a child or adult. My opinion is if you are joining the army join it at the right age and you should truly think the whole thing over because when you go there's no going back.

  3. I was suprised when I noticed that Jonathan was overly confident about the war. I understand that Jonathan loves action and violence just like most thirteen year old boys, but actually joining the war is nuts! Jonathan should wait until he is eighteen, when he's an adult and can make his own decisions. Sometimes Jonathan really suprises me.

  5. I noticed Jonathan has already chosen to join the war. In my opinion it's a big mistake. He's only thirteen, he's not even a full grown boy yet. He's got his whole life ahead of him, joining a war isn't the best way to live it off. There so many bad things that could happen. For example he could get shot, any day that your on duty you run the risk of getting shot. I understand that you want to stand up for your country and do what you believe is the right thing, but you really have to think first. Do I really want to do this? Am I willing to die for my country? If you're anything like me both of your answers would me no. I'd rather be a normal kid. As they say, you only get to be a kid once , not twice, not three times so why give it up? Jonathan should truely reconsider his idea and just move on. I mean those New Jersey jersey's aren't that cool anyway right? You can live with out them, if you join the war you won't live period. So i guess what I am trying to say is that you only get one life so you have to live it wisely, and to the best of your abilities.

  6. I noticed that Johnathan wants to join the war at the age of 13. Johnathan is very young yet he already imagines being in the war and fighting in it. If I were him, I would probably not join the army at all, let alone at such a young age. Kids at this age should have other interestes pertaining to their teenage year. For instance, Johnathan should be more concerned about the changes going on in his life and in his environment. Obviously, kids at this age start to see things with a more mature perspective. Although, they are not adults, this is a turning point in their lives. Even though, Johnathan's decision to join the army seems to be an adult decision, he is only a child going through changes. In my opinion, this decision is way too mature for someone his age. He should be enjoying his life and not thinking about the harsh life of a soldier.

  7. i was shocked when this litttle boy that is only 13 would want to join a war. in my opinion i would say that he has just made a mistake that might affect his life, if that was me, i wouldnt want to go to war. i wouldnt because it would put your life in danger or worse. i think i know why he would want to go to war because he thinks he would be a hero or noticed by people.basically i am saying it is wrong to try to be in a war because their are other ways to be notice.

  8. It annoyed me that Jonathan wanted to go to war but didn't listen to anybody about the dangers. Jonathan is overly confident because all he cares about are the rewards of winning the war and the honor to wear a uniform. He also seems to not listen to anybody of the dangers of war and also any signs. A quote from the story is that "Whenever Jonathan asked his father about the war his eyes clouded up ." His father even lost a leg to a gun. If I were him I would have panicked. I say it is one thing to wat to be in a war but it is another to actually be in a war. This is why I say Jonathan is overly-confident. Perhaps there is still time for Jonathan to survive

  10. I wish that Jonathan would grow up and stop being overly-confident. He thinks that war is all about the costumes and the guns. He doesn't know the sacrifices he would have to make. All of his family wouldn't even talk of war. The fighting ground states "his fathers eyes became unvieled, and they revealed themselves to be full of fear". Even after this Jonathan was stll excited about the war. These are the reasons I say Jonatan should grow up. It is indeed one thing to be excited about war than actually being in one.

  11. I realized that Jonathan is overly confident about the war. He wants to join, but he's only thirteen and he is barely even a man yet. Jonathan doesn't even realize the dangers of war. He could get killed, injured, and possibly never return home.Jonathan doesn't even know what war is like. In the story, the narrator tells us that "Whenever Jonathan asked his father about war, his eyes clouded up." Jonathan doesn't understand that his father doesn't want him to face the horror he had faced, out there in the fighting ground. Truly Jonathan is might be making the biggest mistake in his life.

  12. i wish i knew why jonathan is so overly confident about the war,i really don't know why anyone would be confiednt about war because you'll never know what to expect. if i was jonathan instead of disobeying my father i would actually listen to him because if his father went to war and lost a leg and his father always fear war why would a 13 year old kid want to be a part of that. i think that if jonathan really make it into war he's going to have to learn his lesson the hard way. i really wish him luck

  13. I don't understand why Jonathan has already decided to go to the war and has not stopped a to think for a second. There are extremely dangerous and horrific things that happen in war such as being killed. It amazes me how stubborn he is, how nothing horrible said about the war, could change his mind. Jonathans father couldn't even change Jonathans mind, and he even lost his leg in the war! On page 6, the narrater states, "The bells started to ring, and for a moment, Jonathan saw fear in his fathers eyes." Wasn't seeing his strong father have afraid of the warning bell enough for Jonathan to at least be skeptyical about going to the war? Truly, Jonathan made a bad chose by going off to war without thinking about the consequenses first.

  15. I did not like the fact that Jonathan was over confident about the war. He is only thirteen years old and wants to join the war, for me is too young for a boy like him to choose such a decision. Including the reason why he is not joining the war for a true and respectful reason. Joining the war just for the uniform and awards is not what a true soldier would enroll into the war for. I even don’t understand why Jonathan does not think the many reasons of what could happen to him. If I was him I would wake up and say is this the right choice. I truly suggest that Jonathan should rethink his unintelligent decision.

  17. I wish that I could really understand why at the age of 13 Jonathan would want to go to war. I dont think he has the mind to just stop and think about all the consequences of going to out to war. One of them being he might be severly injured or maybe even be headed for death. On page 6, the narrater clearly states, "Whenever Jonathan asked his father about the war, his eyes clouded up". So if his fathers eyes would cloud up, meaning the war was a bad thing, then why would Jonathan even think about going off to war. It just doesn't make sense to me how 13 year old would run off to war and sad thing is, Jonathan thinks war is just people wearing nice suits with the ablilty to hold a gun. Truly, Jonathan should have thougth about whats headed his way.

  18. Why do you suppose that Jonathen is overly confident about the war? I do not understand that! If i was Jonathen I would be twice the size freaked out more then anyone else! It is foolish of him being so confident because he does not know what it is like to be right there seeing your friends in the war get shot! Jonathen is a real-risk taker because he wants to join the army. All he seems to care about is being in that Jersey Army Uniform, that isn't what a war is about! Perhaps once he actually see's a batte he'll change his mind about joining the war.

  20. I was shocked when Jonathan insisted on going to the war when his parents clearly insisted that it was too dangerous. Obviously, Jonathan does not understand the causes and effects of war. The war does mean that you can fight for your country and hopefully, you might win, but thats not the point. The point is that the war is too dangerous for young kids like Jonathan. I would stay away from danger, mind my own business, and stay in the warmth and protection of my parents. On pg 6, the narrator quotes, "Whenever Jonathan asked his father about the war, his eyes clouded up." Jonathan might think that those tears in is fathers eyes are tears of joy, but they are actually tears of sorrow and saddness. Jonathan's father was injured in the war, which is terrible, but, Jonathan obviously thinks that in the war, u have non-stop life, and fancy uniforms and thats it. Indeed this is why I am surprised that Jonathan wanted to go into the war when he could stay home and not be in danger about going into the war at 13 years old.

  22. It annoyed me that Jonathon wanted to join the war for all the wrong reasons. He just wants to join for the uniform and sense of accompilshement when they win. He should want to join to defend his country not to wear a uniform. All he ever thinks about is, as stated on page 9 of The Fighting Ground,"Good as his brother. Maybe as pa, maybe better." That is what annoys me most about Jonathon. He indeed needs to undertsand the right reason of joining a war.

  23. I was very bewildered when I read that Jonathon had wanted to go to war. I mean, he is 13, it’s not like he’s 20. If I were his age, I would want to stay home and I would be scared to go to war. He thinks he is an adult but, in reality, he’s still a child. He thinks its all about the guns and uniforms but there is also the danger of getting hurt, like his father, or getting killed. I agree with Arienne, when you go there's no going back. Perhaps he will realize this before goes and joins the army

  24. Jonathan, you just stopped and rolled to go to war. War is for adults. Jonathan you are making a terrible decision. You are only 13 years old, is there something wrong with you. You are not even an adult yet. You do not even know what you are getting yourself into. You think you are making a good decision, but you are not. Jonathan is you just liking the uniform you are wearing, or what. Jonathan you can really get hurt or even die from a battle wound. The narrator pointed out that “Do it! Go and Fight” but Jonathan really didn’t mean that. Jonathan that terrible decision you made you will pay for down the road.

I was surprised when Jonathan wanted to be a soldier and participate in the war because most kids would be scared to fight in a such a young age. Jonathan is definitely over-confident about the war. During that time, if I was Jonathan, I would first think about the consequences of my choice, whether it's good or bad. The good consequence would be that you will receive praise for your brave act, however you might get injuired or even killed. On the other hand, Jonathan doesn't understand the dangers of the war and doesn't listen to his father. I am sure that Jonathan's father doesn't want him to get hurt. Perhaps, it's best if Jonathan listens to his father.

  26. I wish Jonathan would think more about joining the war. So far in the book, all he thought about in joining the war was wearing the soldier uniform, and the victory if they win at the end. He never stopped to look at all of the dangers and hard work it takes to be a soldier and to be in the war. I also wish that jonathan would listen to his father and everyone else who knows about the danger and has been telling him about it. Jonathan needs to think about his actions BEFORE doing them. He thinks he is ready and knows what to do, but the war is a lot more and a lot harder than he thinks. He needs to stop and think about joining the war and all of the consequences. He wouldn't be able to see his family that much either, and he would miss them terribly. He also shouldn't have ran away. What if he gets shot in the war or something happens to him, his family would have never gotten a proper goodbye. He also probably never thought about the reason his father's eyes always clouded up whenever he asked him a question about the war, because i certainly have. His father's eyes always clouded up probably because he didn't want Jonathan to see the emotion in his eyes, which was probably sadness since he lost his leg in a war. Or because his other son and nefew were in the war too and never sent a word. Another reason could be that he was having a flashback but didn't want to share it with his son to make him want to go more because he didn't want him to leave too. In my opinion, I think Jonathan should deffinately think more about joining the war.

  27. I was bewildered to find out that Jonathan wanted to go to the war. At the age of thirteen you would think he would want to do safer activties. He is wanting to go to the war without thinking about the consequences and dangers. One danger would be that he could get injured or paralyzed for life. One major consequence would be him losing his life forever. Jonathan will never be able to enjoy the great things in life. Also, Jonathan is wanting to go to war thinking that it is all about the uniforms and winning. On page six the author stated "Whenever Jonathan asked hs father about the war, his eyes would cloud up". You would think that after seeing his father have a painful flashback that he would not want to go anymore. Perhaps Jonathan is still stuck in a fantasy that war is fun, when it is not.

  28. I was bewildered when I found out that Jonathan actually desired to go to war because he knows of the horrific things that could happen to him while battling someone. I wonder why he would just decide to run off the way he did without thinking about the precautions he needs to take before going into battle. Jonathan even seems to think that war is all about the uniforms and winning fights. Although I could see why everything may seem like play in the mind of a 13 year-old boy, Jonathan should still be aware of the terribly frightening things that could take place while he is at war. Especially since he saw the "cloudy" look in his father's eyes every time Jonathan would ask him about war. Perhaps Jonathan is going to have to possibly get hurt for him to learn and realize that war is no game.

  29. I was supriesed when Johnathan from the book ''The Fighting ground'' was overly confident about the war. I think he makeing a bad chose because he is only thirtenn and he is fighting growen men. In war soilders don't care who they kill even if they are fighting a war. so Johnathan could die or get badly injured. Johnathan is not thinking of the bad consequences of going to war becuase he just want the rewards of going to war. All he wants is the uniform and fighting in the war like his brother and cousin. I truly think that Johnathan will be supriesed at what he see's in the war.

  30. I was surprised when I found out how overly-confident Johnathan is about this was. Seriously, he is only thirteen. That is not the same as being twenty-five years old. On page 9, the author stated,"I think I am as good as my brother. Maybe even as good as pa. Maybe even better." this is what gets on my nerve. He is getting much too cocky about this war. He thinks it is only about tha uniform and the rewards. He dosn't know about the dangers of war. If I were him I would first, wait till I was older, and then second, get all of my facts strait. I truly think that Johnathan will be in a great surprise when he enters the battlefield.

  31. I was astonished when I found out that “Jonathan was overly confident about the war”. I kept wondering why a young thirteen year old boy would want to join the war. I concur that Jonathan liked violence and action like most thirteen year old boys but he must be berserk, why in the world would he want to join the army at thirteen years old? He apparently doesn’t know the saying; you only get to be a child once not twice or thrice ONLY ONCE so DON’T WASTE your childhood. If I was in Jonathan’s prospective or in other words point of view I would want to be at home with my parent snug and warm, not in the army! When that bell rings I would run home and hide under my bed! If someone even asked me to be in the war I would probably go ludicrous. Maybe Jonathan has some type of sickness that makes him go crazy and want to join the army; perhaps Jonathan will come to his senses and pay attention to what his parents are saying to him .Its like its goes in though one ear and come out through the other; if I were his parents I would beat him up!

  32. I predict that Jonathan, in the book "The Fighting Ground," will suffer a similar injury like his father if he does eventual join the war. This will probably happen because that is what Johnathan, the protagonist, wants to do. Now the injury he suffers is losing his leg to a gunshot wound, which I still don't know how is possible, like his father as I said before. I also predict that Jonathan at the end of the story Jonathan will have his own son who bothers him about stories about war like the relationship with Jonathan and his own father. Truly something will happen to change Jonathan’s opinion about war.

  33. I wonder why Jonathan even want to be in the war. He is only 13 and yes he can handle a gun, but there is going to be other people in the war who can handle it better. What if he was killed on the field. It would be too late to say, I should have listened to my dad. In the text it states,", Jonathan saw fear in his father's eyes". If I were him , I would stay home. I truly think Jonathan made a bad choice.

  35. It surprised me when Jonathon did not listen to his mother when has specificly said not to go with the men going to battle station. He should have listen to his mother because she is very worried about him and he might die. Jonathon did not listen to his mother so at least he should have brought domething with him a gun, food or some kind of weapon. To a solider he is just a kid that will die when he enters the battle. He needs to be noticable to get attention from people on what is happenning if the British are coming or if it is practice when the Brittish come. Why didn't he stay well it is what he wanted. Truly it is surprizing when Jonathon went and find out what was going on.

  37. I disagree with Jonathan's decsion to disobey his parents and join the war. He is oblivious to the fact that the war is dangerous and is lethal especially to only a child. People in war will not take pity on little children who aren't even supposed to be there in the first place. The war is traumatizing for anyone, you witness alot of evil and violence which can lead to depression. That's if you survive. In the war, you have to be quick and ready for anything but how can he do that when the gun is half his size and is about the same height as him. Jonathan needs to get a grip on reality and realize that the war is troublesome. The narrator stated, " He passed the place where a boy he knew used to live; they hadn't quite been friends. He'd gone off and gotten killed." That should've been a wake up call for him! Perhaps if he thinks he is better then his pa and brother, just wait 'till he faces the real war ahead.

  38. I do not agree with jonathan with disobeying his fater. He was problebly getting anoyed of get bossed by his parents. Mabye he wanted to show that he can handle himself and be a real man. Yet he doesn't even know what he might see. Also what he may go through like getting shoot. it was silly since his father had gotten shoot in the leg and he just left his father at home and he could see the dangers of fightingin a war. since his wepon is old and it seems uncomfortable and heavy. He might have trouble defending himself in case of an emergency. he will know what he ahs gotten themselves into once he has to kill someone or just fight in the war.

  41. I realized that there are many signs warning Jonathan not to go to the war. For example, when Jonathan and his army were marching, he noticed that there were clouds in the sky. A citation from the text is that, " A storm was coming, a big one." To me it symbolized danger. If that was not a warning, I don't know what is. Jonathan should have went out through the back door like the tavern keeper had suggested. If I were him, I would run back home and never look back. Indeed Jonathan did not pay attention to the signs.

  42. It annoyed me that Jonathan, at age thirteen is foolish enough to think that he can actually HANDLE the dangers of war! He is in a massive and ample rush to get old and i dont find that healthy for the mind nor body! Jonathan only interests in seeing himself in one of those fancy red suits which dont come like a Christmas present, they come with strong and difficult work! Jonathan's father yelled out to him "Dont you, By God,Dont you go beyond that fence!" When he did so he was showing his compassionate love for his little son! He never wanted to possibly hear about Jonathan getting fatally shot in the war! But Jonathan is, like I said, too interested in seeing himself in one of those red suits! he never even stopped to think about why his Father yelled at him and how much he could hurt his family if he just went of into war unexpectedly! But this is how he repays his Father for showing his love over Jonathan, with disobediance and disloyalty! Truly Jonathan is a fool but from the heart I hope he survives this war!
